Swedish massage is the modality that usually comes to mind when people think about massage. The most common massage technique, using long smooth gliding strokes, kneading, and circular movements to promote circulation, relaxation and relieve muscle tension. One of the primary goals of the Swedish massage technique is to relax the entire body.

Deep Tissue massage is the modality known to relieve severe tension in the muscles. This bodywork slowly progresses into deeper layers of tissue to relieve chronic tension. It concentrates on breaking up lactic acid build-up in the muscles and promotes tissue healing. Deep tissue is aimed at the deeper muscle layers located below the surface muscles, and will in most cases work out hard knots or adhesions that exist in those muscles. Many of the same strokes and techniques used in Swedish massage are also implemented in Deep Tissue, but the pressure is usually more intense and focused. Rather than massaging the entire body evenly, Deep Tissue massage will usually base the session around problem areas and stiff muscles.

Neuromuscular massage is a more intense form of bodywork that consists of focused, concentrated massage on one specific area of the body. Through direct steady pressure, triggers are deactivated and muscles are reeducated into a pain-free pattern. With repetition and adjustment of pressure, this becomes a therapeutic tool that influences the nervous system’s reflexive responses and their connection to muscle function and/or pain.

Myofascial massage uses steady, gentle pressure to thoroughly soften and relax hard or tender areas within the fluid components of fascia or connective tissue while separating, straightening and stretching the muscle layers. This is accomplished by combining deep tissue and neuromuscular techniques with range of motion (moving the muscles and joints), passive stretches and positional release (holding trigger points within a stretch or specific position). When trauma or injury surface, the fascia, a thin connective tissue covering the entire body, becomes restricted tightening the muscles it envelops. This work aims to lengthen the fascia again, facilitating relief through release.

Sports massage is the combination of the above modalities geared toward athletes of every kind. This bodywork can be performed with the client fully clothed. It incorporates several modalities and focuses on assisted stretching.

Hot stone massage is the use of heated stones to assist in the warming up of the muscle fibers and helps release muscle tension and fatigue. Heated, flat stones are placed at specific points along the body’s energy centers to provide additional warmth and muscle relaxation, allowing deeper pressure, if desired. The hot stones’ warmth improves circulation and calms the nervous system.

Aromatherapy massage is the addition of essential oils to a bodywork session to help alter mind, mood or health. This can be done either by a diffuser or by diluting them into the massage oil/lotion. Aromatherapy massage works when essential oils are inhaled and a chemical message is sent to the brain triggering an emotional response. Aromatherapy massage taps into memory and triggers feelings of happiness, safety, relaxation, peace or energy. This combination can provide stress relief and pain relief, help aid a sleeping disorder or physical condition, or energize the mind and body.

Pregnancy massage is a nurturing treatment focusing on the special needs of a mother-to-be. This modality engages the circulatory system, which keeps blood flowing to both the mother and the baby. By relieving nervous tension and stress on joints, neck and back areas, this bodywork helps to stabilize hormone levels throughout the body.
